TURLOCK, Calif. — The Otters got two solid pitching performances Friday to earn a split on Day 1 of the Tournament of Champions at the Pedretti Sports Complex. Sophomore
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) tossed her third shutout in her last three starts to earn a 1–0 win over Western Washington in the morning, but 2 2/3 innings of 1–hit, shutout relief by junior
Rosalia Keirns (Claremont HS) wasn't enough to stop Concordia–Portland from taking a 4–3 decision in the afternoon.
Fein is starting to round back into the form that earned her CCAA Freshman of the Year honors in 2017. She scattered five hits and fanned seven Vikings to earn her 10th win of the season. She is now 8–3 in her last 11 starts. She has allowed just one run in her last 23 innings.
Freshman
Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) made Fein the Game 1 winner. She laced a 1–out single up the middle to plate
Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) with the walk–off run in the bottom of the seventh. Hennings led off with a single and moved to third on a
Savanna Salyer Kovacs (Camarillo HS) double.
In the second game, Concordia used a 2–out walk and an Alexandria Steen home run to take a 2–0 lead in the first inning. The Otters pulled to within 2–1 fourth and 4–3 in the fifth. Despite getting two runners into scoring position in the sixth and another in the seventh, CSUMB couldn't find the tying run.
Hennings was the only Otter to hit safely in both games, finishing the doubleheader 3–for–6 with a double, a triple and a pair of runs. The normally potent CSUMB offense managed just seven total hits in the two games.
Weather permitting, the Otters will continue play at the Tournament of Champions Saturday with games against Notre Dame de Namur (11:30 a.m.) and Western Oregon (7 p.m.).
GO OTTERS!
