SAN MARCOS, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team used its first two shutouts of the season, solid defense and a couple of big innings to earn a 6–0, 7–0 sweep of Cal State San Marcos Sunday afternoon at the CSUSM Softball Field.
Sophomore
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) struck out six in a 4–hit shutout to win the opener. She was outdone in the nightcap by junior
Rosalia Keirns (Claremont HS), who tossed a 1–hitter in her first start of the season to complete the sweep.
A
Savanna Salyer Kovacs (Camarillo HS) RBI single in the first inning gave Fein all the run support she would need in the opener. By the time
Courtney Hennings (Amador Valley HS) capped a 4–run fourth with an RBI double, the game was all but out of reach.
A 2–run single by freshman
Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) topped off a 5–run Otter first in Game 2.
Julia Garcia's (Oxnard HS/Ventura College) 2–run double in the second was just piling on with Keirns dealing. The only hit Keirns allowed was a 2–out single in the fifth as she completed the second 1–hit shutout of her career.
Salyer Kovacs led the Otter offense with 3–for–7 with a pair of doubles. Hennings and Garcia also doubled as part of CSUMB's 18–hit performance.
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… a
Courtney Hennings double made it 5–0 Otters in the fourth. San Marcos didn't manage as much as another hit until the seventh inning.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Courtney Hennings singled home
Joanna Perruccio for the first run of the game in the first inning. With
Rosalia Keirns in top form, the Cougars never threatened the Otter lead.
A PERFECT 10… With Sunday's win,
Rosalia Keirns has now won 10 consecutive decisions dating back to last season. She is 10–1 in her collegiate career with her only defeat coming in a relief appearance as a freshman.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Freshman
Aubrey Cousins came in to pinch hit in Game 2 and singled to left for her first collegiate hit.
1–HIT WONDER… Rosalia Keirns tossed her second career 1–hitter in her first start of the season Sunday at San Marcos. Her first 1–hitter came last season in her first collegiate start, a 3–0 win at UC San Diego on Mar. 16, 2017.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Hayley Fein (2x7, RBI, W (8–7), 7.0 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 6 K, 4 BB);
Rosalia Keirns (2x6, RBI, W (1–0), 1 H, 0 R, 2 K, 4 BB);
