ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team battled a tough Sonoma State team on Friday afternoon at the Seawolf Softball Field. Game one saw a back-and-forth affair, with the host team coming out on top in the end, 6-5. CSUMB looked to salvage a split on game two, but were upended in a 5-0 loss.
The Otters struck first in game one off the bat of
Courtney Hennings on a 2-run shot that curled around the left field foul pole, giving CSUMB a 2-1 lead after the first frame. Both teams plated a run in the second inning bringing the score to 3-2, but it was the Seawolves 3-run fourth inning that put SSU over the top. SSU added a run in the fifth inning to hold on to the lead, despite a 2-run sixth inning by CSUMB, leading to a 6-5 Otter loss.
Game two was all Sonoma State from the get-go as SSU plated two runs in the first and second innings to go up 4-0. A run in the fourth made the score 5-0. The Otters struggled to get anything going against SSU pitcher Brigid Ruiz, as they couldn't send more than five batters to the plate in any inning. CSUMBÂ wound up with the 5-0 loss.
