HAYWARD, Calif. — No. 15 Cal State Monterey Bay softball jumped back into the win column with a home–opening sweep of Holy Names University Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters rolled to a 5–inning, 16–1 win in the opener before earning a more pedestrian 8–2 win in the nightcap.
Sophomore pitcher
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) was sharp, fanning six Hawks in just 3 2/3 innings. She allowed three hits and a unearned run before giving way to freshman
Ellie Bauer (San Rafael HS), who struck out two and walked one in 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
At the plate, the Otters got all the offense they would need in a 6–run first that included just two hits: a 2–run single by
Savanna Salyer Kovacs (Camarillo HS) and a bases–clearing double by freshman
Gabrielle Forbes (San Jose/Presentation HS). CSUMB tacked on three in the second before Fein's bases–loaded double highlighted a 7–run third that sealed the win.
RBI knocks by
Katie Ramos (Placentia/El Dorado HS) and Forbes capped a 5–run first inning in the nightcap. That was plenty for freshman
Morgan Hawkins (Folsom/Vista del Lago HS), who allowed just four hits and two unearned runs while fanning five in a complete game effort..
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Gabrielle Forbes' 3–run double capped a 6–run first inning.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Gabrielle Forbes stole home as part of a double steal to make it 7–0 Otters in the third inning..
GOING FOR A RUN—16 TIMES… CSUMB's 16 runs were its most in a game this season and its most since scoring 17 in a 17–0 win over Holy Names on Mar. 7, 2017.
WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Gabrielle Forbes first collegiate hit proved to be a memorable one as her bases–loaded double drove in three in the first inning of the opener.
ON A ROLL… Joanna Perruccio hit safely in both games to run her current streak to six game. It's the longest streak by an Otter this season.
