Late Rally Falls Two Points Short As Otters Fall In CCAA Opener

Charlie Tooley scores 24 but S.F. State scores final three points to pull out 78–76 win

SAN FRANCISCO — A furious Cal State Monterey Bay rally gave the Otters a pair of late leads before host San Francisco State scored the game's final three points to take a 78–76 decision Friday night in The Swamp.

Junior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) scored a career–high 24 points and Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) added season highs of 16 points and eight rebounds for the Otters.

CSUMB trailed by 13 points with just over seven minutes remaining. It took the Otters four minutes to erase that deficit when Tooley capped a 13–0 run with a traditional 3–point play to knot the game at 69–69 with 3:38 left in regulation.

The teams traded the lead six times over the next two–plus minutes, with a Tooley 3–pointer putting CSUMB up 76–75 inside the final minute. A Jiday Ugbaja layup restored SFSU's lead. The Otters had three cracks to tie or retake the lead in the final 40 seconds before time ran out.

THE GAMES WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Chiefy Ugbaja stole a long Koen Sapwell inbound attempt with five seconds remaining.

THE BOMBERS ARE BACK… After starting the season curiously slowly from long range, the Otters found the 3–point range again Friday night at SFSU. The Otters made 13 of 32 from beyond the arc (.406). The 13 treys rank No. 12 on the Otter single–game list.

TOOLEY BREAKS THE 20–POINT SEAL… Charlie Tooley's 24 points Friday night not only were a career high, they represented the first 20–point game by an Otter this season. Jahvon Johnson and Koen Sapwell shared the team high through the first four games with 19 points each.

KOLLMAN MOVES UP THE LIST… Josh Kollman made a pair of 3–pointers Friday night to more from 14th place into a tie for 12th on the CSUMB career 3–pointers made list with 81. He enters Saturdays game at Sonoma State tied with D'Shon Cannon (2006–08) and James Thomas (2011–14). He needs two more to tie Joe Breazeal (1999–00) for 11th place.

JAHVON JOHNSON NOW 19TH IN CAREER SCORING… Jahvon Johnson scored eight points Friday night to pass Mike Miller (2003–04) for No. 19 on the CSUMB career scoring list with 620 points. Johnson needs 14 more to catch Steve Monreal (2008–09) for No. 18.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Charlie Tooley 24; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 8; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Charlie Tooley 3; BLOCKS: Kyle Johnson 2; STEALS: Charlie Tooley 3.

THE LAST WORD… ""Obviously we would have liked to have played better basketball, and it goes without saying that we really wanted to win the game. That being said, our guys showed an incredible amount of toughness late in the game tonight. Down 13 with 7 minutes to go, we fought back and took the lead.  Unfortunately, we just didn't close it out. They say that there is no substitute for experience, so in that regard we gained something tonight even if it didn't show on the scoreboard." — CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters finish their Bay area road trip at Sonoma State Saturday night. Tipoff is 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of mens/women's doubleheader action.
