Brooke Roy breaks Hadley Clark’s freshman 6K record

SUNNYVALE, Calif. — Brooke Roy (Camus [Wash.] HS) ran the fastest 6K by a freshman in Cal State Monterey Bay cross country history to highlight the Otter day at the Bronco Invitational Saturday morning.

Roy navigated the Baylands Park course in 22:17.7. It was the 20th fastest 6K ever by an Otter. She shattered Hadley Clark's (Tamalpias HS) freshman record of 22:59.10 set at the Bronco Invitational in 2015.

For her part, Clark, now a senior, ran a season–best 23:09.9 Saturday to finish in 47th place as CSUMB's No. 2 runner. Juniors Alex Baron (San Jose/Prospect HS) and Ashlyn Barajas (Eastvale/Ayala HS) and freshman Tiffany Jones (Clovis North HS) closed the Otter scoring. They placed 13th in the 23–team field.

In the men's race, senior Matt Morris (Casa Roble HS/American River College) led the Otter contingent by finishing the 8K in a season–best 26:30.6. He missed his PR at the distance by just 6/10ths of a second. Promising freshman Nathan Garcia (El Centro/Southwest HS) followed Morris in a season–best 26:53.6.

Junior Zak Strader (Valencia HS/College of the Canyons) ran his 8K PR with a 26:59.1. Sophomore Logan Phillips (Tigard, Ore./Jesuit HS) closed the Otter scoreline with a season–best 27:09.5. CSUMB finished 16th overall in the 21–team field.

"We had some strong results today," said CSUMB Head Coach Greg Rhines. "The team is still learning how to run 6Ks and 8Ks, making today that much more impressive."

The CSUMB cross country teams will jump right back into action next weekend by competing at the Lumberjack Invitational Oct. 20 in Arcata. It will be their final tuneups before  the CCAA Championship Meet Saturday, Nov. 3 in San Bernardino.
