SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team started 2018 inauspiciously as visiting Stanislaus State rolled past the Otters 83–57 Thursday night in The Kelp Bed. The 26–point final margin was the largest of the season for CSUMB.
The Otters used a 12–0 run to rally back from a 14–point deficit to within 21–19 midway through the first half. They stayed within striking range until a frigid start to the second half saw CSUMB score just 10 points in the first 15 minutes of the period. That allowed Stanislaus to build its lead to as many as 35 points.
Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) came off the bench to lead CSUMB with 15 points. Fellow freshman
Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia/Trinity College Gawler) added 10 points in just 16 minutes.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… A Xavier Francois layup gave Stanislaus a 73–44 lead with 9:57 to play.
A THIEF IN THE NIGHT… Senior guard
Mateo Jones collected four steals Thursday night to jump from No. 5 all the way to No. 2 on the CSUMB career steals list with 92 career thefts. He has 12 regular season games remaining in which to catch Alex Fertig (2012–15), who owns the Otter career record with 108 steals. If Jones maintains his current pace, he will finish with 116.
REBOUNDS ANYONE?… Rebounding has been a relative strength for CSUMB in 2017–18. That wasn't evident Thursday, however, as Stanislaus out–rebound the Otters 48–28. It marked the largest rebounding differential against CSUMB this season.
PAINT IT BLACK… Thanks in part to 19 offensive rebounds, Stanislaus won this game inside, out–scoring the Otters 40–14 in the paint.
