Otters Ride Boxcars To Sweep Of Gators

CSUMB completes 4-game sweep with two 6-3 wins Saturday

SAN FRANCISCO -- A pair of boxcars was enough to lift the No. 10 ranked Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to a doubleheader sweep of San Francisco State Saturday afternoon at the SFSU Softball Field. CSUMB won both games by identical 6-3 scores to improve to 38-7 overall and 26-6 in CCAA play.

Senior right fielder Sam Luna (Salinas HS/MPC) led the offense with her second 2-home run game of the season in Game 2. She finished the afternoon 4-for-8 with three runs and five RBIs. Sophomore catcher Lusi Stanley (San Jose/Howard College) added her fifth home run of the season in the nightcap.

The three Otter homers supported a strong start from sophomore Rosalia Keirns (Claremont HS), who improved to 9-0 on the season. Keirns took a perfect game into the fifth and a no-hitter into the sixth. When the Gators began a rally in the seventh, freshman Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) came on to record the final two outs for her second collegiate save.

Fein earned her 24th win with a 4-hit complete game in the opener.  She allowed just one earned run while striking out a career-high nine.
CSUMB fell behind early thanks to some unusually suspect defense that allowed the Gators to take a 3-0 lead through four innings. SFSU senior Megan Clark allowed just a third inning infield single to Mikal Cuellar (Cabrillo College) through five innings before the Otters exploded for six runs in the sixth.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Sam Luna's 2-run single capped the 6-run Otter rally in the sixth. Hayley Fein was in control at that point, retiring nine of the final 10 Gators to seal the win.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… Lusi Stanley's 3-run homer made it 6-0 Otters in the fourth.

LEADING OFF… With 24 wins in 2017 (24-6), Hayley Fein now owns the No. 3 mark for most wins in a season in CSUMB history. Lindsey Clarkson, who won 25 games in 2014, sits at No. 2. Cori Reinhardt owns the Otter record with 30 wins in 2015.

ON DECK… By hitting two home runs in Game 2 Saturday, Sam Luna joins Julia Garcia (Ventura College) and Shae Olds as the only players in Otter history to hit two home runs in a game more than once. Luna can take an extra measure of credit for this oddity, however: In both of her 2-homer games, she hit the home runs on consecutive pitches.

IN THE HOLE… Senior first baseman Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) went 4-for-7 Saturday to raise her hitting streak to 14 games. It's the longest streak by an Otter in 2017.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Sam Luna (4-for-8, 2 HR (4), 2 R, 5 RBI); Lusi Stanley (1x5, HR (5), 2 R, 3 RBI); Courtney Hennings (2x6, 2B, SAC); Madison Casto (4x7,  RBI); Hayley Fein (W (24-6), Sv (2), 7.2 IP, 1 ER, 4 H, 10 K, 3 BB).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of the Otter Sports Complex to host No. 13 Chico State in their final regular season home series Friday and Saturday, Apr. 21-22.
