SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team got a pair of solid pitching performances that seemed almost superfluous in light of its continued offensive onslaught as the Otters completed a series sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills by sweeping a doubleheader 7–1 and 11–3 (5 inn.) Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.
Freshman pitcher
Hayley Fein (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) picked up her third victory of the weekend and sixth of the season by scattering six hits in the opener. Sophomore catcher
Lusi Stanley (San Bruno/Howard College) provided the big bat by driving in four runs, including her first home run as an Otter.
Sophomore pitcher
Rosalia Keirns (Claremont HS) took a star turn in the circle in the series finale, tossing 4 2/3 innings of shutout relief while striking out a career–high five to earn her second win.
The Otters rapped 14 hits in support of Keirns, with junior third baseman
Julia Garcia's (Ventura College) walk–off, 3–run triple ending the game via run rule in the fifth.
GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Lusi Stanley crushed a no–doubt homer to dead center field (a 3–run shot) to make it 7–0 Otters in the fifth inning.
GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Julia Garcia's bases–loaded triple capped a 5–run fifth inning that gave the Otters the run rule win.
LEADING OFF… CSUMB's 11–3 victory in Game 2 was its sixth run–rule win of the season. The Otters had eight run–rule wins in all of 2016.
ON DECK… Eleven has been the magic number for the Otters so far in 2017. Sunday's Game 2 win marked the fifth time in 13 games this season that the Otters have scored exactly 11 runs.
IN THE HOLE… The Otter offense is in midseason form already. Through 13 games, CSUMB is hitting .372 as a team and averaging a none–too–shabby 7.5 runs per game.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Lusi Stanley (5x6, HR (1), 3 runs, 5 RBIs);
Julia Garcia (4x8, 3B, 3 RBIs);
Hayley Fein (W, 7.0 IP, 6 H, 1 R, 1 K,);
Rosalia Keirns (W, 4.2 IP 0 R 5 H, 5 K).
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will hit the road for a 4–game set at Cal State San Bernardino Mar. 3–4. They return home for a single game against Holy Names University Mar. 9.
GO OTTERS!
