Free Throws Prove Costly In 72-57 Loss

Otters make just 4 (of 12) from the line in loss at Cal Poly Pomona

POMONA, Calif. — Cal Poly Pomona beat Cal State Monterey Bay 16–4 from the free–throw line Friday night, using that edge and a quick start to earn a 72–57 victory in Kellogg Gym.

Pomona began the game with an 11–0 run. The Otters, as always battled back, but seven missed free throws in the first half stifled their efforts, allowing Cal Poly to head to the lockerroom with a 36–24 halftime lead.

Despite attempting just one free throw in the second half the Otters got to within single digits several times, but couldn't pull any closer than six points. The Broncos out–rebounded the Otters 19–7 over the final 20 minutes, including eight offensive boards, to keep Monterey at bay.

Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) scored 13 points and Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) added 12 for CSUMB. They each grabbed eight rebounds to account for 16 of CSUMB's 26 boards Friday night.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… A Chris Sullivan free throw gave Pomona a 70–52 lead with 3:29 to play.

ONE STREAK ENDS… Jahvon Johnson's streak of consecutive games scoring 20 or more points came to an end at three when he scored a team–high 13 points in Pomona.

…WHILE ANOTHER STREAK CONTINUES… Jahvon Johnson ran his streak of scoring in double figures to five consecutive games with Friday's 13–point effort. Its the second time in his career he has put together a 5–game streak. He is the first Otter to do it since Kevin Warren closed last season by reaching doubles in five consecutive games.

FREE THROWS ARE COSTLY… Free throws were rare commodities for CSUMB Friday night in Pomona. The Otters made just four (their second lowest total of the season) while shooting a season–low 33 percent (4-of-12) from the stripe.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 13; REBOUNDS: Jahvon Johnson/Mateo Jones 8; ASSISTS: 4 Players 2; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: 4 Players 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the 2017 calendar year with a game at Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night in Coussoulis Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
