Record-Setting Night Falls Two Points Short

CSUMB makes school-record 18 3-pointers in 84-82 loss to S.F. State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's record–setting night from 3–point range fell two points short of a second consecutive big win as visiting San Francisco scored with 2.7 seconds remaining to pull out an 84–82 win Sunday evening in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB set school records for 3–pointers made (18) and attempted (40) Sunday. It also appeared as if the Otters were going to play a record fourth overtime game as well when Jahvon Johnson's (Clovis North HS) layup with seven seconds left in regulation knotted the game at 82–82. But Brantley Bynum took the ensuing inbounds pass coast–to–coast for the game–winning layup.

Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) got off a three–quarter court shot at the buzzer, but it didn't come close.

Johnson led a trio of Otters in double figures with 20 points. Freshman Koen Sapwell (Adelaide South Aust./Trinity College Gawler) added 18 on six 3–pointers. Jones and Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) led the way on the boards with 11 and 10 rebounds respectively.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Mateo Jones' desperation 3–point attempt didn't fall as the final buzzer sounded.

BOMBS AWAY… CSUMB's 18 3–point field goals broke the school record of 15 set twice previously, last at Humboldt State on Feb. 15, 2008. The 40 3–point attempts broke the record of 39 set in the same game.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… The big shooting night was a team effort as seven of the nine Otters who saw action Sunday made at least one. Koen Sapwell led the way by going 6–for–9 from long range. Fellow freshman Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) made four.

TWENTY TIMES FOUR… Jahvon Johnson recorded his fourth 20–point game of the season Sunday versus S.F. State. As a team, the Otters posted just six total 20–point games in all of 2016–17. Kevin Warren led the way with three of the six.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 20; REBOUNDS: Mateo Jones 11; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Mateo Jones 5; BLOCKS: Mateo Jones 2; STEALS: Brian Garrett 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the Central Valley to take on NCAA Division I foe Fresno State Monday night at the Save Mart Center. Tip-off will be at 7 p.m. The game will be an exhibition for CSUMB but will count as a regular season game for the Bulldogs.
