Golden Eagles Take 3-Point Fest, 95-78

Freshman Josh Coleman sparkles in debut with 6 treys, 18 points

LOS ANGELES — If you like 3–pointers, than Friday night's CCAA men's basketball opener between Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State L.A. was your cup of tea. The teams combined to take 64 3–pointers and make 27 of them.
Unfortunately for Otter fans, by the time the dust had settled, L.A. had taken a 95–78 decision in the Eagles Nest.

CSUMB freshman Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) made his collegiate debut an impressive one, knocking down six treys to share team–high scoring honors with Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) at 18 points. The Otters also got 16 points on a perfect 6-for-6 shooting night from junior center Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS).

CSUMB never led in this one, but the Otters stayed close until L.A. eased away late in the first half to grab a 54–41 lead at intermission. The teams played to a stalemate through the first 15 minutes of the second half, before a Golden Eagle run in the game's waning minutes accounted for the final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Garrett Carter's layup made it 87–68 L.A. with 3:13 to play.

KOLLMAN FROM DOWNTOWN… Josh Kollman's six 3–point field goals Friday night are tied for No. 8 on the CSUMB list for 3–pointers made in a game. Brandon Ward set the record of eight at Sonoma State in 2012. Four different Otters made seven treys in a game. Ryan Nitz was the most recent Otter to turn that trick, making seven against UC San Diego on Jan. 16, 2016.

BOMBS AWAY… CSUMB's 34 3–point attempts Friday night rank No. 4 on the Otter list for a single game. The 12–made 3–pointers rank No. 8 on that Otter single–game list.

JOHNSON LENDS A HAND… Sophomore Jahvon Johnson set a personal best by passing six assists Friday night in L.A. His previous best was five against Cal State San Marcos on Jan. 7.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Mateo Jones/Josh Kollman 18; REBOUNDS: Jonquis Bouyea/Brian Garrett/Josh Kollman 5; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 6; BLOCKS: Anthony Booker/Jahvon Johnson/Mateo Jones 1; STEALS: Jonquis Bouyea/Mateo Jones 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2–game Southern California trip with a game Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
