SEASIDE, Calif. — Thursday afternoon proved to be an absolutely perfect day for a soccer match on the Monterey Peninsula. So much so, in fact, that the Cal State Monterey Bay and Cal State San Marcos women's teams decided to play an extra 20 minutes at the Otter Sports Complex.
The bonus soccer didn't matter in the end, however, as the teams left the field with one point apiece after a scoreless draw.
CSUMB created several glorious chances to score, perhaps none better than a
Jenna Viss (Modesto/Waterford HS) ringer off the cross bar seven minutes into the second half. Less than 13 minutes from time, San Marcos goalkeeper Yesenia Betancourt stoned
Madison Aguirre (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) three times in seven seconds to keep the game scoreless.
Otters hopes took flight again midway through the final overtime period when two quick passes sprung Aguirre on a breakaway from near midfield. She took one touch too many, however, allowing Betancourt to come way off the line to smother her attempt.
The final chance of the match belonged to San Marcos, and only a pair of incredible saves by Otter sophomore
Alyssa Noh (Aliso Niguel HS) saved a point for CSUMB. Cougar midfield Lauren Perry took an angled shot from 15 yards out, forcing a fully–extended diving save from Noh. Senior midfield Meghan Randig pounced on the rebound inside the six yard box, but Noh extended to her right again to parry the ball outside the post in the 106th minute.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Two brilliant saves by
Alyssa Noh in the 106th minute denied the final scoring chance for either team.
KEEP IT CLEAN… Alyssa Noh's shutout of San Marcos Thursday was her fifth of the season, tying Lily Garza (2013) for the Otter single–season record.
BETTER THAN AVERAGE… Thursday's clean sheet lowered
Alyssa Noh's goals against average to 0.91. That mark ranks No. 2 on the CSUMB single–season list, trailing only the 0.69 GAA posted by Lily Garza in 2013.
LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: None; GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; SHOTS:
Madison Aguirre 4; SAVES:
Alyssa Noh 4
THE LAST WORD… "While we were very unlucky to not get the win today, we completely controlled the game and absorbed San Marcos' direct style.
Dio Ruiz was brilliant controlling the tempo of the game and breaking down their pressure. We hit two cross bars and couldn't convert on a break away in overtime. That being said, I couldn't be prouder of the style and poise we showed today." — CSUMB Head Coach
Laura VanWart
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters bring the curtain down on 2017 with a match against CCAA leader UC San Diego Saturday afternoon. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the second match on men's/women's doubleheader action.
GO OTTERS!
