SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team scored twice in rapid succession midway through the first half then added a penalty in the second half to support
Jesus Ochoa's (Modesto/Enochs HS) second shutout in a 3–0 win over Cal State San Marcos Thursday at the Otter Sports Complex.
The Otters got a pair of cracking goals less than two minutes apart when freshmen
Pedro Hernandez (Bay Point/Mt. Diablo HS) and
Makenna Pendleton (Archbishop Mitty HS) scored at 27:25 and 29:19 respectively. Hernandez headed home a perfect cross and flick combination by
Edrey Valencia (Overfelt HS/West Valley College) and
Justin LaPerle (Sacramento/Oakmont HS) for his first collegiate goal while Pendleton brilliantly split three defender into the middle of the box , from where he scored his fourth.
Pendleton added his fifth of the season in the 65th minute after a Cougar handball in the box earn the Otters a spot kick.
The final half hour was about keeping the sheet clean for Ochoa. His backline kept him mostly protected though he was called into action late to make a diving saving on a Noah Park attempt from the upper left corner of the penalty area.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Makenna Pendleton buried one from the spot in the 65th minute to make it 3–0 Otters.
5 WILL GET YOU 10… Despite playing in just his 10th game of the season,
Makenna Pendleton took the team lead for both goals (5) and points (10) on the season.
FAB FIVE… Makenna Pendleton is the first Otter freshman to reach five goals (and 10 points) in a season in the program's NCAA era (2004–present).

THE LAST WORD… "Lady luck was on our side where we created enough chances to win a game with two freshman scoring goals, that's sorta been the story of our season." —
CSUMB Head Coach Shane Carew
