SEASIDE, Calif. — Big Innings continued to be the theme for the Cal State San Bernardino softball team as the Coyotes put up crooked numbers late in both games to earn an 8–3, 8–2 sweep of Cal State Monterey Bay at the Otter Sports Complex Sunday afternoon.
The Otters took an early 3–0 lead in the opener before San Bernardino rallied with five runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to secure the win. CSUSB scored its eight runs on just seven hits, marking the third consecutive game in which they did not accrue more hits than runs.
San Bernardino loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning of the nightcap, but relief pitcher
Tori Pierucci came in to limit the Coyotes to just two runs. Run–scoring singles by
Courtney Hennings and
Chase Robledo in the Otter half of the first tied it before the game settled into a pitcher's duel between Pierucci and San Bernardino starter Amanda Ramirez.
It stayed tied into the fifth inning when San Bernardino opened the frame with three singles around a sacrifice to start a 3–run burst. The Coyotes put the game away one inning later when Ashley Leffingwell hit her third homer of the season, a 3–run shot, to account for the final margin.
Courtney Varela finished a strong weekend for CSUMB by going 3-for-7 with two runs and two steals Sunday. She finished the 4-game series 8-for-15 with four runs and four steals.
Hennings also hit safely in both games Sunday to finish the weekend 6-for-12 with a home run and six RBIs.
CSUMB will head south to Carson to begin an 8-game roadtrip Friday and Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Otters return home to close the regular season Apr. 22–23 against Stanislaus State.
