SAN MARCOS, Calif. — As Yogi Berra would have said, it was déjà vu all over again for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team Saturday. For the second consecutive day, CSUMB split a doubleheader at Cal State San Marcos in eerily similar fashion to the way it split just 24 hours earlier.
Saturday, San Marcos rallied late—much like it had the previous day—to win the opener 6–3 before the Otters raced to a big lead to win the nightcap, this time by a 6–3 score.
Junior center fielder
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) set a CSUMB record with four doubles in the twinbill and tied
Bianca Noriega's (Ventura/Camarillo HS) CSUMB record with three doubles in the Game 2 win. She finished the 4–game set with four doubles and a home run.
After taking her first game off of the season in the opener, junior All–American
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) broke out of a slump by hitting s 3–run shot, her third of the season, to stake the Otters to an early 3–0 lead in the nightcap. An RBI double from Lopez and a pair of RBI knocks from
Alyssa D'Agostino (Chino Hills/South Dakota State) helped the Otters build an insurmountable lead.
The six runs were enough for Otter freshman
Tori Pierucci (San Mateo/Hillsdale HS), who earned her team–leading sixth win of the season with her second complete–game victory of the weekend.
RBIs from
Katie Ramos (Placentia/El Dorado HS), Lopez and
Jenae Coleman (Castaic/Hart HS) staked the Otters to a 3–0 lead in the first inning of Saturday's opener. But the usually sound Otter defense committed four errors—leading to five unearned runs—allowing San Marcos to put up two spots in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings en route to the 6–3 win in the opener.
In addition to Lopez, junior right fielder
Courtney Varela (Torrance HS) had a day of her own Saturday, finishing the doubleheader 4-for-6 with two runs and three stolen bases.
CSUMB will complete its 3–week roadtrip with a doubleheader at Sonoma State Wednesday afternoon in Rohnert Park. The Otters return home to host UC San Diego Mar. 21–22 at the Otter Sports Complex.
GO OTTERS!
