ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay offense had trouble getting its footing and managed just two runs Tuesday afternoon as Sonoma State swept a doubleheader, 6–0, and 4–2 at Seawolf Field.
Despite collecting six hits in the first three innings, CSUMB (9–12, 4–10 CCAA) suffered its second shutout of the season in the opener. The Otters were shutout just once in their previous 111 games prior to that.
Sonoma (10–6, 7–3), meanwhile, jumped on top early in both games, taking advantage of five walks, two hit batters and an error in the first two innings alone to jump to an 3–0 lead in the opener. A 2–run homer by Jordann White staked the Seawolves to a 2–0 lead in the first inning of the nightcap.
The Otters made it interesting in Game 2. After an
Alyssa D'Agostino RBI ground out cut the deficit to 3–1 in the fourth, a bases-loaded single by
Madison Casto pulled the Otters to within 3–2 with one out in the fifth. But Sonoma reliever Brielle Vidmar induced infield popups from
Bianca Noriega and
Marielle Valdez to end the threat before the Seawolves tacked on a run in the sixth to account for the final margin.
Casto and
Courtney Varela were the only Otters to hit safely in both games Tuesday. Varela finished the day 3-for-7 and Casto finished 3-for-6.
The Otters continue their 10–game roadtrip Friday when they're scheduled to begin a 4–game set at Cal State East Bay.
GO OTTERS!
