LAS VEGAS, Nev. — What a difference a day makes. Twenty four little hours is all it took for the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team to bounce back from an 0–2 start with a pair of convincing wins on Day 2 of the 2016 Desert Stinger Classic at Majestic Park.
The Otters earned their second run–rule victory of the season with a 10–2 win over the University of Mary in Saturday's opener. Senior
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) then put on a show in the nightcap, fanning a career–high 14 in a 15–2 win over tournament host Montana State Billings in the final game of the night.
Clarkson's 14 Ks were not only a personal best, they are the second most ever recorded by an Otter pitcher and the most ever in a seven–inning game. Jessica Boyle fanned 20 in a 16–inning effort versus Notre Dame de Namur back in 2009.
The Otters had been receiving solid pitching from both Clarkson and freshman
Tori Pierucci (San Mateo/Hillsdale HS), but the offense hadn't offered much support as CSUMB split its first four games this season. All that changed in a big way on Saturday.
CSUMB actually fell behind Mary 2–0 before a 3–run blast from sophomore third baseman
Chase Robledo (Camarillo HS) capped a 4–run third inning that put the Otters ahead to stay. A bases–loaded triple in the sixth inning from
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) set the table for
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS), who followed with a 2–run shot to right field to walk off the win.
Clarkson wasn't the only Otter to put on a show against Billings. South Dakota State transfer
Alyssa D'Agostino (Chino Hills) hit her first two CSUMB home runs and tied a school record with six RBIs to support the 3–hit pitching of Clarkson. Casto and
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) each had three hits in the 18–hit Otter attack.
CSUMB (4–2 overall) will close play at the Desert Stinger Classic with a single game Sunday afternoon versus Hawaii–Hilo. First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
