SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team will have to wait another week to try for its first CCAA wins of 2016 after Humboldt State completed a series sweep with wins of 3–0 and 10–1 Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB fell to 5–6 (0–4 CCAA) while Humboldt improved to 9–1–1 (4–0).
Otter pitchers did themselves no favors, combining for 16 walks and four hits batters in the doubleheader. In fact, Humboldt needed just seven hits to score its 10 runs in the nightcap.
By contrast, Lumberjack pitchers Katie Obbema and Madison Williams were on their games again. Obbema threw a 2–hit shutout in the opener, with both Otter hits coming in the seventh inning. Williams, who fanned 11 Otters Friday afternoon, had nine more Saturday.
A bright spot once again for the Otters was freshman pitcher
Rosalia Keirns (Fontana/Claremont HS), who came in and threw four innings of 2–hit relief in the opener to keep the Otters in it. But after leadoff singles from
Madison Casto and
Bianca Noriega in the seventh, the Otters couldn't finish the rally.
An RBI single by Casto in the first inning of the nightcap had things trending up for CSUMB. But Humboldt scratched out four runs (two unearned) on just one hit through the first three innings.
The Otters had a chance to get right back into it in their half of the third following a leadoff single from
Courtney Varela, a double from
Anneliese Lopez and a Noriega walk. But Williams fanned two with the bases loaded to escape the jam.
CSUMB managed just one hit over the final four innings as Humboldt gradually pulled away.
Noriega finished the doubleheader 2-for-5 with a double to extend her hitting streak to nine games. Casto also had a hit in each game and has reached safely in all 11 games this season.
The Otters will look to bounce back next weekend when they head northeast to face Chico State in a 4–game series beginning Feb. 19 in Chico. CSUMB returns home to host San Francisco State in a 4–game series Feb. 26–27.
GO OTTERS!
