SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay exploded for three second half goals to win the women's soccer Battle of the Bays 3–0 over visiting Cal State East Bay in the season finale for both team Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.
Karlee Neer (West Torrance HS) opened the ledger in the 67th minute by finishing a scramble on the doorstep with her first collegiate goal.
Ashlee Cortez (Trabuco Hills HS) and an insurance marker—her team-leading fifth of the season—in the 80th minute before
Madison Aguirre (Las Vegas, Nev./Palo Verde HS) put the Pioneers out of their misery with her first collegiate goal 89 seconds from time.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Christen Silkey (Sonoma Valley HS) tossed her second shutout in three matches, making three saves in the process.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Ashlee Cortez finished a 50–yard counter attack by drawing goalkeeper Jasmine Corbett off her line then firing home from just inside the penalty area to make it 2–0 in the 80th minute.
THRICE AS NICE… CSUMB's three goals Saturday were its most of the season and the most since it scored three times in a 3–0 win over Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 25, 2015.
ONE HALF MAKES A WHOLE… The three second–half goals match the most the Otters have scored in one half against an NCAA Division II opponent. Saturday's second half equaled the biggest half by the Otters since they put four behind William Jessup University in the second half of a 4–1 win on Sept. 7, 2011. For the record, that was
Erin Reinke's first match as Otter head coach.
SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOODBYE… Saturday's match was the final collegiate match for senior
Amanda Guerrero (San Diego/Granite Hills HS). Guerrero played in 35 matches and made 10 starts for the Otters after transferring from Grossmont College for the 2015 season.
THE LAST WORD… "The win feels great. We played really hard today. It was for Amanda (Guerrero). She was our senior and it was her last game." —
Karlee Neer, Sophomore Defender
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Saturday's win marks the final match of the 2016 season for CSUMB women's soccer. The Otters will play several exhibition matches in March–April before returning to regular season action in September, 2017.
GO OTTERS!
