SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay softball teams started its 2016 season on the right foot with an 11–0, 6–4 sweep of Dominican University Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. They were the season–openers for both teams.
Senior
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) tossed a 5–inning, 2–hitter to win the opener. The Otter offense took advantage of four walks and three hit batters by Dominican starter Kelsey Goodner to plate 10 runs in the first two innings en route to the run–rule victory.
In the nightcap, freshman
Tori Pierucci (San Mateo/Hillsdale HS) threw 4 1/3 innings of shutout relief to earn her first collegiate win. The Otters fell behind 4–2 after three innings but rallied for a run in the third before All–American
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) blasted a 2–run double to the gap in right center to put the Otters ahead to stay.
"I was pleased with our performance today. A young MB team overcome some adversity to pick a win in game two," said CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney. "I am excited to coach this team. We will get better and better."
Junior
Alyssa D'Agostino (Chino Hills/South Dakota State) enjoyed her Otter debut to the tune of a 4–for–6 afternoon with two doubles and three RBIs. Junior center fielder
Anneliese Lopez (Ventura/Buena HS) opened the CSUMB home run ledger with a first inning solo shot in Game 2. Junior catcher
Jenae Coleman (Castaic/Hart HS) added a double and three RBIs in the opener.
The Otters hit the road to play five games at the Desert Stinger Classic in Las Vegas Feb. 5–7. They return home to open defense of the CCAA title Feb. 12 against Humboldt State.
