SEASIDE, Calif. — Results around the CCAA Saturday night ended Cal State Monterey Bay's run at a postseason bid, but that didn't stop the Otters from giving their home fans a farewell presenting in the form of a 78–64 thumping of perennial power Cal State San Bernardino in The Kelp Bed.
Senior
Greg Anderson (Murietta/Palomar College), playing in his final collegiate home game, scored all 11 of his points in the first half to help the Otters race to a 26-7 lead before the game was nine minutes old. In fact, he scored seven of CSUMB's first nine points as the lead grew to 15-4 before the first media timeout.
Anderson was one of five Otters to score in double figures Saturday night. It marked the second consecutive game in which five Otters reached double figures—the first time in CSUMB history an Otter scoring quintet went back-to-back in double figures.
Sophomore
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS) led the way with 16 points. He also dished a career-high six assists. Junior guard
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) scored 12 points, and in so doing, passed Dexter Amey for third place on the CSUMB career scoring list with 1,032 points. He is now 43 points behind Matt Dalhamer for the No. 2 spot.
Joining the aforementioned trio in double figures were
Marquise Washington (Los Angeles/Cerritos College) with 12 and
Isaiah Smith (Vancouver, Wash./Columbia River HS) with 11.
CSUMB improved to 13-13 overall with the win (9-11 CCAA). It marks the third consecutive season of improvement for the Otters, who won 10 games last season. They need to at least split their final two games next week to finish .500 or better for the first time since going 16-14 in 2009.
The Otters close their season by playing at CCAA-leading Chico State Friday and at Cal State Stanislaus Saturday.
GO OTTERS!
