LAS VEGAS — The 2015 season couldn't have started much better for the No. 10 Cal State Monterey Bay softball team, which improved to 4-0 with a pair of 11-0, run-rule wins to open play at the Desert Stinger Classic Friday at Majestic Park.
The Otters defeated Azusa Pacific in five innings in their opener then dispatched 2014 NCAA Regional participant Western Oregon in six. That brings the Otter streak of winning via the run rule to three consecutive games, the third time in four seasons that they've turned that trick.
CSUMB earned the wins with a tour de force performance that included stellar play in all three phases of the game. In the circle, the duo of
Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly) and
Lindsey Clarkson (Fresno/Central HS) continue to amaze. They've combined to allow just a single unearned run through four games.
Reinhardt did her part with a 2-hit shutout of Azusa Pacific, fanning four in the abbreviated complete game. Clarkson was also masterful, scattering four hits while striking out nine in the win over Wester Oregon.
The duo benefited from ample offensive support as they Otters crushed five homers in the two games.
Bianca Noriega (Ventura/Camarillo HS) began the power surge with her first home run of the season in the fourth inning versus Azusa. Freshman
Chase Robledo (Camarillo HS) crushed one to dead center field in her first collegiate at bat, a pinch-hit appearance in the fifth inning.
Noriega was at it again in the nightcap, hitting one deep into the Las Vegas night in the third inning of what was, at the time, a 1-run game with Western. Clarkson helped her own cause with a 2-run shot in the fourth before
Danica Arterburn (Sparks, Nev./Spanish Springs HS) went yard with another 2-run blast in the to kick start at 6-run sixth.
Noriega finished the day 4-for-7 with four RBIs. Sophomore
Courtney Varela (Harbor City/Torrance HS) also went 4-for-7 with four runs.
Madison Casto (Sunnyvale/Homestead HS) had two hits and three walks while Reinhardt walked four times, scored twice and drove in a pair.
In addition to Robledo, freshmen
Lauren Hammond (Lake Forest/El Toro HS) and
Katie Ramos (Placentia/El Dorado HS) each doubled in their first collegiate plate appearances. Freshman
Jayme Stark (La Quinta HS), who came off the bench to triple in her first collegiate at bat Wednesday versus Hawaii-Hilo, went 1-for-3 with three RBIs in the win over Azusa.
CSUMB continues play at the Desert Stinger Classic with two games Saturday. The Otters take on UC-Colorado Springs at 4:30 p.m. and West Region rival Western Washington at 7 p.m.
GO OTTERS!
