MONMOUTH, Ore. -- The end of a long time on the road came to end on Saturday night as the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team played Saint Martin's during day two of the Western Oregon Tournament. CSUMB allowed SMU to get off to hot start and were unable to claw all the way back, falling for the fourth consecutive time, 83-90.
Saint Martin's came out firing and built a comfortable 10 point lead at half time. CSUMB improved its shooting in the second half, going 18-for-32 (56.3%), but could only get to within six points in the end as the Otters were not able get over the hump and take a lead.
Ryan Nitz (Rancho Cucamonga HS) poured in 28 points to lead all scorers on the night. Nitz was one of four Otters who scored in double figures. He was joined by
Evan Zeller (Mission Viejo HS) - 16, Mateo Jones (Victorville, Calif./Silverado HS) - 15, and
Alex Fertig (Fresno, Calif./Buchanan HS) - 12. Cole Preston led the Saints with 19.
Greg Polosky (Danville, Calif./San Ramon Valley HS) and Fertig led the team to 29 rebounds with five each.
The Otters move to 0-4 on the season. However, Monterey Bay will play in the Kelp Bed for the first time this season on November 29, when they take on Simon Fraser in search for the illusive first win.
GO OTTERS!
