SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- After
Alejandro Garcia's (Oxnard, Calif. / Hueneme HS) gave the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team a 2-1 lead in the 73rd minute, CSUMB was shocked when Cal State San Marcos fought back to score the game–tying and game–winning goals in less than two minutes, sending the Otters home with a tough 2–3 loss.
Sydney native
Adam Voloder (Sydney, Australia) scored his second goal in as many games nearly 11 minutes into the game, putting CSUMB up 1-0 early on. However, a straight red card issued to
Jorge Herrera ( San Jose, Calif. / Leland HS) two minutes later meant the Otters would be a man down for over 75 minutes. The Cougars took advantage and scored on the ensuing free kick to tie the game at 1 goal apiece.
All was quiet until Garcia broke the tie with a beautiful bending ball that found left net, giving CSUMB the 2-1 edge. Just when the Otters thought they had things wrapped up, Luka Stevanovic scored his second goal of the game and the season to knot the score once again. One minute and 47 seconds later, CSUSM's David Martin finished the game and the Otters with a bullet from close range.
Otter goalkeeper
Evan Drake (Sacramento, Calif./El Camino HS) did all he could, tying a season high with seven saves.
CSUMB falls to 7-4, 4-3 CCAA. While the Otters will return home on Friday, the path does not get much easier as Monterey Bay will battle with No. 7 Cal State Dominguez Hills. Kick off is set for 12:30 p.m. at the Otter Sports Complex.
GO OTTERS!
