SEASIDE --- Backcourt mates #D'Shon Cannon# and #Steve Monreal# combined for 39 points to lift the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team to its fifth straight win Friday night, a 90-83 victory against visiting CSU Stanislaus.
Monreal came off the bench to lead the Otters with 21 points and had four assists as well. While he made just three of 10 from the field, Monreal sank 13 of 16 free throws. Cannon had 18 points and forwards #Jose Sanchez# (17) and #Augie Johnston# (11) also scored in double figures. The Warriors got an outstanding night from their star, Rick Cordoso, who had 23 points and 19 rebounds.
CSU Stanislaus dominated the boards overall, outrebounding CSUMB 44-28, but the Otters committed just six turnovers compared to 20 for the Warriors. The Otters (7-12 overall and 6-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association) tightened their grasp on a place in the conference's post season tournament with the win, while Stanislaus fell to 4-16 overall and 3-10 in the CCAA.
The Otters started slow, falling behind 23-13 midway through the first half before going on an 11-0 run to take their first lead. After nine more lead changes, the score was knotted at 42 at intermission. CSUMB dominated most of the second half, growing the lead to 81-69 with four minutes left.
With 1:10 left in the game, the Otters led 85-76 and the game looked to be over, but Stanislaus made one more push. Heath Colvin converted a three-point play to get the Warriors within six and they fouled #Jose Sanchez#, who made one of two free throws. Colvin made another quick two to make it a five-point game with 50 seconds left and then stole the inbounds pass. Fortunately, the Warriors were unable to convert on the possession and Johnston was fouled after grabbing the defensive rebound. Johnston made both free throws to widen the margin back to seven and that would be enough to quell the threat.
