TURLOCK --- Woeful shooting by the Otters led to a huge early deficit, but the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team was able to mount a furious comeback but fell just short, losing to CSU Stanislaus 78-76 Saturday night. 

The Otters made just four of their first 17 shots before #Jose Sanchez# finally hit a three and the Otters found themselves down 28-11 midway through the first half. But, with the aid of a 12-2 run, the Otters finished the half down just 37-29. The Otters then opened the second half at a furious pace and were able to tie the score at 41 and take their own lead for a time before the Warriors mounted a comeback of their own and re-established a lead of 71-66 with 3:52 left.

Trailing 76-69 with less than 2:00 left, the game looked out of reach but a technical on the Warriors combined with a shooting foul made for a four-point trip and CSUMB was within three. Seconds later, #Augie Johnston#, who finished with 18 points, hit a three to tie it at 76 with 1:30 left. With the score still tied at 76 and just 27.8 seconds, CSUMB had the ball and ran the clock down to three seconds before taking the final shot, the ball bounced off the rim and with 1.3 seconds left, the Otters were called for a foul during the battle for the rebound. That put Scott Behrs on the free throw line and he hit both to give the Warriors the 78-76 win.

Besides Johnston, three other Otters scored in double figures. Sanchez finished with 14 points, #Juston Willis# had 17 points and #Joe Mitchell# contributed with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The Warriors Rick Cardoso led all scorers with 21.

The loss leaves CSUMB 0-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 1-9 overall. CSU Stanislaus improved to 2-2 in the CCAA and 3-8 overall. The Otters next game is at home on Friday against Sonoma State. The game tips off at 7:30 p.m.
