(SEASIDE, Calif.) Cal State Monterey Bay won their fourth straight match Saturday night beating Humboldt State by scores of 30-27, 31-33, 30-20, 30-23 at the Otter Sports Center gymnasium. The Otters improve to 5-11 (3-2 CCAA) while Humboldt State falls to 6-8 (2-4 CCAA).
"I was proud of our defense and our coverage. They played with and for each other, " said head coach
Jody Garry. "I've been emphasizing this concept since day one. Coverage is all about work ethic and our defense covered our hitters and gave them a chance to swing."
Brittany Etchings posted an impressive 20 kills and 21 digs to go with 3 aces. Courtney Taubert also recorded 20 kills on the evening while freshman setter Dana Grimm had 47 assists and 4 aces. Melissa Nickas led a strong defensive effort for the Otters with 23 digs.
"I thought Dana did a great job of running our offense, " explained Garry. "She consistently put our hitters in a position to be successful. We are fortunate to have two good young setters in Dana and Juliette (Ward) Every day is battle for those two to get on the court."
The Otters return to the road next week with CCAA matches at Chico State Friday, Sept. 28th and at Cal State Stanislaus Saturday, Sept.29th.
