[BOX SCORE GAME 2]
CSUMB split a doubleheader and tied a CCAA series for the first time this year on Sunday against Chico State, falling just short 6-5 before holding off the Wildcats for an 8-7 win.
The Salinas Sports Complex was nothing like the mud hole that caused the game to be delayed 24 hours. Chico State used the rest to their advantage as they scored two runs immediately after the game picked up with the Wildcats ahead 3-2 and batting in the fifth. CSUMB answered with arun int he bottom of the inning from Jessica Wardle's bases-loaded single, but a groundout by the next batter stranded three runners. Chico State ended their scoring with a home run from first baseman Chelsea Lundberg in the 7th when the Otters started their comeback. After a bases loaded walk that gave the Otters a much needed run, the rally ended abruptly when after a sacrifice fly, Megan Russo was caught off the bases to end the game with Chico winning 6-5.
The second game had more nailbiting as the Otters entered the final inning with a 7-3 lead until a bevy of walks and hits gave the visitors four runs and tied it. Chico State had five of their ten hits in the final frame. In the bottom of the inning however, CSUMB won it on their last out when a redeemed Russo hit a smash which forced the second baseman to bobble it and attempt an off-target throw that Eliana Cortes beat for the winning run.
