Otters Split Doubleheader with Chico State to End Losing Streak

[BOX SCORE GAME 1]
[BOX SCORE GAME 2]

CSU Monterey Bay suffered an unlucky 6-5 loss to Chico State before turning around and posting a 10-0 run rule victory over the Wildcats.

The Otters had a 1-0 lead in the first game until their luck changed. After Jessica Boyle took a no-hitter to the sixth inning (including 13 straight batters retired at one point), Chico State (13-27, 6-20 CCAA) came alive with 2 runs in the sixth and 4 in the seventh. Twice the Otters rallied from deficits. Trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth, the Otters tied it at 2 with Ashlee Trotter's fifth home run of the year (and 17th her career). Entering the seventh down 6-2, the Otters scored three times to get within one, but Rachel Gendron was able to strike out Trotter to end the game.

Game 2 was totally different, as coach Andrea Kenney shuffled her lineup and they responded with one of the most productive batting days of the year. Five of the Otters' first six batters hit safely as the hosts built a 3-0 lead. It was expanded with a six run, eight hit fourth inning. Ramona Garcia allowed just two hits to get her sixth win of the year. The Otters (18-35, 5-25 CCAA) outhit the Wildcats 15-2 in breaking their six-game losing streak. Kristin Rassmussen went 2-3 with 3 RBI, and the Wacker sisters were perfect. Erika went 2-2 and Leann went 3-3. Boyle played a spectacular game at first base including an unassisted double play. The teams play their second doubleheader at 10am tomorrow.
