CSUMB opened its sophomore softball season with fine performances from the team's sophomores.
The Otters split their on the first day of the Diamond Sports Best of the West tournament, beating Notre Dame de Namur 5-0 in the first game before losing a heart-breaking 10-9 extra inning game to Chico State. In the morning game, sophomore Jessica Boyle got the win pitching 4 1/3 shutout innings and striking out three. Fellow sophomore Ashlee Trotter went 2-4 with 2 RBIs. In the afternoon game however, the Otters couldn't hold on to their leads or add onto them. In the third inning, sophomore Megan Russo hit the Otters' first home run of the year, a three-run shot that gave CSUMB a 4-1 lead. After stranding 6 runners in the last three innings of regulation, CSUMB was still two outs from victory until Jennifer Chacon's 2 RBI bases-loaded single with 1 out tied the game at 7-all. In the eighth inning, the Otters took the lead back thanks to RBI's from Boyle and freshman Kaitlyn Baca. However, they flied out with the bases loaded to end the inning. Chico State took advantage in the bottom of the eighth, and Chelsea Lundburg hit a one-out single to score two Wildcats and win the game.
CSUMB continues the tournament tomorrow with a pair of games, starting at 1:00 pm against CSU Dominguez Hills.
