UCSD Sweeps Series With Otters With Close 9-8 Win

[BOX SCORE]

CSUMB closed out a weekend series with UC San Diego with a tough 9-8 loss to the Tritons, their second one-run loss in the four game series. The Otters fall to 12-32, 7-25 in the CCAA.

The Otters-looking for redemption after a record 26-5 loss Sunday- opened with some offensive fireworks of their own. The Otters grabbed a 3-0 lead in the second inning from home runs by Budd Glock and Benjamin Mayberry. However the Otter bats were just warming up. After the Tritons (29-14, 18-6 CCAA) took an 8-3 lead, the Otters loaded the bases and cut the lead to 8-4 with a bases loaded walk in the sixth. Then Gerry Rommel made history as he smacked a home run to tie it. It was the first grand slam for CSUMB in their 99-game history and tied the game at 8. Unfortunately, UCSD designated hitter Matt Cantele once again became the ruiner for the Otters. Cantele hit a home run in the top of the seventh. It was his CCAA-leading 18th of the year and fourth straight game in the series with a round tripper. That gave the Tritons the lead for good. CSUMB had a a chance to get the lead back in the 8th, but grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning. The Otters have a four game break from league games, starting with a home Wednesday afternoon game against San Francisco State.
