Otters Lose Double Header to Tritons

[BOX SCORE GAME 1]
[BOX SCORE GAME 2]

Someday, in the not-to-distant-future, when an established CSU Monterey Bay will look back on the early days of the baseball program and the highs and lows, Sunday April 15 will be one of those days that will come up.

After a 24-hour rain delay, CSUMB (12-31, 7-24 CCAA) lost a doubleheader to UC San Diego in the two most extreme ways possible. The early game the Otters were even with the Tritons throughout and had runners on before losing 7-6. The seven-inning nightcap was a nightmare however, as CSUMB started in an 11-0 hole and fell 26-5.

In the first game, CSUMB held leads of 2-1 and 6-5 before UCSD scored a run in each of the last two innings to pull off the win. In the final inning, the Otters opened with back-to-back doubles and had the bases loaded before a double-play ended the game. Budd Glock went 2-3 with a home run and double. Daniel Gomez went 2-4, including a bases-loaded double that scored three in the seventh inning to give the Otters a one-run lead.

As encouraging the close loss was, the second game went from bad to worse for the hosts. Ace Tyler Harvey was chased in the first inning as CSUMB gave up 24 hits in allowing 26 runs. The Tritons (28-14, 17-6 CCAA) scored 11 runs in the first on 8 hits and never looked back. Four of the Triton hits were home runs, including one from Matt Cantele, the CCAA home run leader who hit his 17th of the year and 3rd of the series. Nick Zaballos and Ben Mayberry went 1-3 and 1-2 respectively and each had a home run to be the bright spots for the Otters. The teams play a make-up game Monday morning at 11:00 am.
