Bethany Takes Round One of "Battle of the Bay" Over CSUMB

[BOX SCORE]

In a memorable beginning to the rivalry CSU Monterey Bay rallied with five runs in the eigth inning, but could not come all the way back from a nine-run hole as they fell 10-6 to Bethany College. The Bruins improve to 11-10 while the Otters drop to 7-19 overall.

Bethany jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first inning off a home run by Frankie Paletta, and stretched it to 10-1 in the seventh inning. Then CSUMB came back with five runs in the eighth inning on five of their 12 hits in the game. The highlight was Jacob Roe's bases-loaded double that scored three runs. The Otters were knocking again with the bases loaded in the ninth, but Bethany forced a groundout to third base to end the game.

Rocky Russo went 2-3 with a solo home run for CSUMB's first score. Roe finished 1-3 with the 3 RBI. Mark Koski struck out six batters to get the win and Paletta went 3-5 with 4 RBI for Bethany, which used the same nine players the whole game to the Otters' 26. CSUMB returns to CCAA play with a home-and-home four-game series this weekend against San Francisco State.
