PHOENIX, Ariz. --- A hot second half burned the Cal State Monterey Bay Womens' Basketball team Saturday night in Phoenix as the Otters fell to Grand Canyon University 79-51.
Trailing 32-27 at halftime, the Otters (1-4) couldn't keep pace with the hot shooting of the Antelopes (4-3), especially Samantha Murphy, who hit four of six from three-point range and finished with 22. Grand Canyon's Rosalyn Nelson led all scorers with 24 on nine of 26 shooting.
“We had a mental letdown, where the team just came out with a lack of intensity — and that affected their entire performance throughout the game,” said CSUMB head coach Amber Magner.
#Dana Andrews# led the Otters in scoring with 17, while #Ja'Nae Westmoreland# scored eight and #Brittany Kikuchi# had seven points. Andrews also had seven rebounds.
Magner said her team learned that every single game counts and every single team out there is ready to make an example of them if they are not ready to play.
“So they will be prepared the next time around,” said the coach.
The next game for the Otters is their home opener on Saturday against Cal Baptist University. The CBU Lancers are 5-1 and ranked no. 24 in the NAIA Division I Women's Basketball Top 25 Poll. The game starts at 2 p.m. at the Otter Sports Center.
