SEASIDE --- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team fell to Fort Lewis College 71-64 Saturday night in the Otters second home game of the season.

The Otters (2-7) trailed by just three points in the final minute of the game, but could not overcome the deficit. With 29 seconds left, Fort Lewis's Laura Redfern hit two free throws to make it 69-64 and another layup in the final seconds by the Skyhawks' Laura Haugen finished the scoring.

#Dana Andrews# led the Otters in scoring with 21 points on 5-15 shooting. She hit 9-13 from the free throw line and picked up three assists. #JaNae Westmoreland# scored nine points and led the Otters in rebounding with 6. #Britnea Moore# came of the bench for CSUMB to score 12.

“We dug ourselves a hole,” said CSUMB coach Amber Magner. “We had a good effort, but we've got to focus for 40 minutes.”

Fort Lewis College (9-1), in Durango, Colo., is a member of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. Friday night, the team pasted CSUMB's CCAA conference rival San Francisco State 67-49.

“They're an excellent team,” said Magner. “And we competed with them, but we were a little careless with the ball.”

Turnovers were a big problem for the Otters, who finished with 21 on the night. The Otters trailed Fort Lewis throughout the game, often by double digits. CSUMB trailed 31-19 early before making a run at the end of the first half to make it 27-32. The Otters were down by 10 with four minutes in the game before making another run, closing within three at 67-64 with 30 seconds left.

The CSUMB women will be on the road for their next two games, both conference opponents; they will play Chico St. in Chico on Friday and then face CSU Stanislaus in Turlock on Saturday night. The men's team has the same schedule.
