BELMONT, Calif. --- Behind a game high 20 points from #Augie Johnston#, Cal State Monterey Bay orchestrated a furious comeback Friday night only to fall short 74-71 to Seattle University at the Notre Dame de Namur University Thanksgiving Classic in Belmont.
The Otters, down by as many as 21 points to the Redhawks, used a 13-2 second half run to cut the deficit to 69-65 with just 2:16 left in regulation.
A #Jacob Kernodle# layup brought the Otters to within two points at 71-69 with 18 seconds left. Johnston followed two Redhawks' free throws with two of his own to bring the score to 73-71. After a quick Otters' foul, the Redhawks left the door open by converting only 1 of 2 free throws. Johnston's three point attempt to tie the game fell short and Seattle escaped with the victory.
CSUMB connected on all 17 of their free throws on the evening, including a clutch 11-11 in the second half. The Otters shot 41% from the field, but were limited to 24% from 3-point range.
In addition to Johnston, three other players hit double figures for the Otters. #Joe Mitchell# posted a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds to go with six assists. #Jose Sanchez# and #D Shon Cannon# each added 13.
CSUMB (0-4) continues play at the NDNU Thanksgiving Tournament Saturday against the host Argonauts beginning at 7 p.m.
