Otters Bow To No. 2 Lynn In NCAA Quarterfinal Round

| By:

Strong season ends with fourth Top 5 finish in last nine years

DANIELS, W.Va. — A great late–season run came to an end for the Cal State Monterey Bay golf team Thursday as No. 2 ranked Lynn University earned a 4–0–1 victory over the Otters in the medal–match play portion of the NCAA Division II Golf National Championship at the Resort at Glade Springs. CSUMB finishes the season fifth in the nation, its fourth Top 5 finish in nine seasons.

So strong was Lynn on this morning that even a 5–under 67 from junior Elis Svard (Sodertalje, Sweden) was good enough only to halve his match with Giovanni Manzoni. Senior Matthew Hedges (Ashland [Ore.] HS), playing his final collegiate round, carded a 74, but it wasn't enough against Tomas Gana, the No. 9 ranked player in NCAA Division II, who shot 69 to win his match.

"We gave it our all and that is all you can ask for," said CSUMB Head Coach Jason Owen. "Some people might point to the fact that Lynn has all of the scholarship money you can imagine, but I wouldn't trade places with anyone. I have a great bunch of players and I am extremely proud of their effort. They are wonderful people to work with."

The Otters will look back on a 2018–19 season in which they did much to admire. CSUMB won its fourth CCAA Championship, produced its second consecutive CCAA medalist (Hedges) and seventh overall and advanced to the NCAA Regional for the ninth time in 11 seasons.
