SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay Otters rebounded strongly after dropping their first two matches of the season, using 13 of their players to take down the Oilers of Findlay University in four sets on Saturday evening, by scores of 25-23,25-19, 19-25 and 25-22.
Sophomore #Rheann Fall# led the Otters with 19 kills, 15 digs and two aces. Senior #Kerri Sudarsana# added 13 kills, with sophomore #Tiffaney Riggs# chipping in eight. Red-shirt freshman dished out a team-high 37 assists, as #Dionna Lucas# and #Monique Sena# had 13 and 12 digs, respectively.
The Oilers struck first and took their largest lead of 21-15, but CSUMB rallied back with a 7-1 run to tie it at 22-22 on an ace at Fall. Back-to-back kills by junior college transfer #Kami Ward# gave the Otters their first lead of the set. A kill by the Oilers made it 24-23 before Sudarsana's kill captured the Otter first set win.
The second set began with seven tied scores before the Otters pulled away with kills by Hanna and Sudarsana to give CSUMB a 10-8 advantage. CSUMB cruised to a 25-19 win and a 2-0 match lead. The Otters recorded three blocks for a tournament set-high with Riggs and Ward nabbing a solo blocks.
The Otters came out strong in the third set, taking a 4-0 lead capped by a Fall ace. Findlay rallied back to tie the game at 8-8. After two tied scores, Findlay snared four straight points and never allowed the Otters back in, grabbing the set at 25-19.
CSUMB came out firing on all cylinders to open the fourth and eventually final set, running off to a 9-2 lead. The Oilers came within one point at 13-12, but once again the Otters went on a quick run on kills by Fall and Riggs. For the match win, Fall tipped the ball over the Findlay block and it dropped in front of the ten-foot line.
Erin Thomasson and Abby Lavigne led the Oliers with 15 and 14 kills, respectively. Morgan Rogers finished with a match-high eight blocks.
The Otters travel to San Francisco on Friday, Sept. 4 to compete in the California Clash Invitational. CSUMB opens up against Hawai'I Pacific at 2 p.m.
