SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer program look to have hit a home run by naming San Jose State lead assistant coach Shane Carew as its new head coach. He succeeds Rob Cummings, who went 37–52–9 overall from 2011 through 2016.

"We're excited to welcome Shane Carew as our new head men's soccer coach. He is passionate about teaching and developing his student-athletes as soccer players and young men," says CSUMB Director of Athletics Kirby Garry. "Shane has worked with and for amazing leaders and mentors. He will draw on his experiences and lessons learned to put his own stamp on CSUMB Soccer. I have no doubt he will make our university, athletics department and men's soccer program better."

Carew has served as deputy to Simon Tobin at San Jose State since 2014. In addition to daily soccer operations, Carew led the Spartans' soccer recruiting and fundraising efforts. He also oversaw team academic success and oversaw the Spartan soccer camp program.

He is the latest fruit produced by the Simon Tobin coaching tree, following in the footsteps of head coaches Jeremy Gunn (Stanford), John Smith (Cornell), Nicole Van Dyke (Penn women) and Kyle Gookins (Stetson).

"I've always believed in surrounding myself with great mentors and I'm ready to gather all of the knowledge I've learned from them and combine it with my ideas to build a soccer legacy at Cal State Monterey Bay," says Carew. "There are so many brilliant soccer players in the tri–county area and I'm a big believer in having players play on their doorstep. I'm looking forward to inspiring girls and boys to play soccer and to play soccer at CSUMB."

Prior to his time in San Jose, Carew was assistant coach at Elon University in 2013 where he helped the Phoenix to a school–record 15 wins and their first ever NCAA Tournament victory, an upset of No. 24 Clemson.

Carew began his collegiate coaching career as the director of soccer operations at national power UNC Charlotte. There, he created a synergistic relationship with the FC Carolina Alliance Youth Soccer Organization, for which he served as executive director. The partnership not only helped FC Carolina Alliance triple in size to more than 70 teams, it helped UNCC rank among the national leaders in soccer attendance.

Carew, who holds UEFA B and USSF A coaching licenses, played professionally for Shelbourne FC and Killkenny City in Ireland and the Long Island Roughriders in the U.S. He played collegiately at UNCC, where he was a 3–time All–Conference USA selection for the 49ers.

He graduated from UNCC with a bachelor's degree in English and communication in 2005.
