PORTLAND, Ore. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team started the 2016-17 season on the road against Concordia University–Portland at the CCAA/GNAC Challange on Friday night.
The Otters got off to a slow start in the first quarter but cleaned off the cob webs leading to a 14 point first quarter and a four point lead. That four point lead would be the biggest of the game for CSUMB as the Cavaliers used the home court to their advantage.
After being outscored 20-7 in the second quarter, the Otters trailed by seven to open the second half. CSUMB narrowly trumped the Cavaliers in the third with a 13-11 battle. However, Concordia took the forth 21-17, leading to a 62-51 loss for CSUMB.
Victoria Dorn (Seaside, Calif.) and newcomer
Aubri Smith (Ventura, Calif.) led the Otters with nine points. Smith also chipped in five assists in her first game in Otter
blue.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... A three pointer by Dorn with 32 seconds left in the game was the final field goal made by CSUMB, making it a six point game. However, the Cavaliers went on to make five straight free throws to seal the deal.
GIVE ME THE NUMBERS... The Otters shot 50% (10-20) from the free throw line, including 66% (4-6) from the charity stripe in the second half.
HITTING THE BOARDS... McKenna Hill (Ventura, Calif.) led the Otters with 10 rebounds giving her 421 for her career, good for fifth all-time in the Otter record book. She passes Julie Heurung (416)
THE LAST WORD... "I was proud of our effort tonight we just made too many mistakes and didn't finsih out layups and free throws. Defensively we were strong, but will need to take better care of the ball going forward." –
Kerri Nakamoto, Head Coach
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... The Otters remain in Portland for one more game as part of the CCAA/GNAC Challenge. Monterey Bay will play Central Washington on Saturday. Tip off is set for 12:30 p.m.
