Moon, Reinhardt, Serna and Villanueva become CSUMB's first softball All-Americans

SEASIDE, Calif. — As it turns out, Yankee Doodle has nothing on the Cal State Monterey Bay softball team. The Otters stuck four All–America feathers in their collective cap Wednesday as Cori Reinhardt (Riverside Poly HS), Jackie Serna (Corona HS), Nina Villanueva (San Diego/Mt. Carmel HS) and Jamie Moon (Torrance HS) became the first Otter softball players to earn All–America honors as selected by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA).

Serna, a senior shortstop, and Reinhardt, a freshman pitcher/second baseman, earned first team honors. Villanueva, a freshman first baseman, was a second team pick. Moon, a senior outfielder, earned third team honors.

The No. 7 ranked Otters were the only team from the California Collegiate Athletic Association to place anybody on the first team and had twice as many All–Americans as the rest of the West Region combined. Pitchers Samantha Lipperd (Sonoma State) and Camielle Gaito (UC San Diego) each earned second team honors.

“First of all, I'm so happy for Jamie and Jackie,” says CSUMB Head Coach Andrea Kenney. “Getting to go out as All–Americans is a fitting tribute to the great careers they've had at CSUMB.

“For Cori and Nina, what a great way to start their collegiate careers. They've set the bar very high, but with hard work, even bigger things are in store for them and for the program.”

Reinhardt, the CCAA freshman of the year, hit a conference record .462 in her first collegiate campaign. Her .517 on base percentage is a CSUMB record as would be her slugging percentage (.735) if not for the efforts Villanueva (.785) and Serna (.741) this season.

In the circle, Reinhardt established Otter records with 23 wins and four saves. Her ERA (1.76) and opponent batting average (.219) both rank No. 2 on the Otter single season lists.

Villanueva also enjoyed a record–setting freshman campaign, breaking Shae Olds' CSUMB record with 16 home runs while tying the CCAA record with 69 RBIs. In addition to her record .785 slugging percentage, she added school records for both put outs (510) and total chances (557). Her 57 runs scored would have been a CSUMB record if not for Angelina Orozco (Clovis East HS) scoring 58 this season.

Moon, meanwhile, enjoyed a record–setting season of her own. She established the Otter benchmarks for doubles both in a season (22) and in a career (58) in 2012 while her .407 batting average raised her career average to .343, No. 3 in the CSUMB career book.

Serna, a first team All–CCAA selection, was the victim of a tight race amongst several deserving shortstops on the Daktronics All–Region list, where she was a second team selection. The coaches saw things differently. Her .414 batting average and .741 slugging percentage were a pre–2012 CSUMB records and lifted her career numbers to school–record .375 and .709 respectively.
