SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay junior shortstop
Jason Merjano and freshman right-hander
Jeff Owen have been named to the 2012 NCBWA All-West Region Team, announced Wednesday.
The squad, sponsored by the
National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association, is a combination of student-athletes from the
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA),
Pac-West Conference and
Greater Northwest Athletic Conference (GNAC).
Owen finished 2012 with a 2.13 earned run average while collecting 47 strikeouts in 62 innings. An NCBWA and CCAA Pitcher of the Week, Owen tossed two 1-hit complete games, including a shutout against CCAA champion UC San Diego.
As one of the Otters most consistent hitters, Merjano concluded the season with a .302 batting average and a team-best 15 doubles. He ranked second in hits (58), runs (35) and RBIs (38). Merjano racked up 18 multiple-hit games and a team-best 11 multiple-RBI outings.
The two other All-West Region announcements from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) and Daktronics will likely be released later this week.
Founded in 1962, the NCBWA is dedicated to the advancement of college baseball. Membership is open to writers, broadcasters and publicists of the sport.
