Rafael Morelos and Coley Apsay are the first pieces of the 2012-13 Otter men's basketball recruiting class.
SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball Head Coach
Rob Bishop added the first two pieces to the 2012–13 Otter men's basketball puzzle with the signing of freshman guard
Coley Apsay (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) and junior forward
Rafael Morelos (Los Angeles/ELAC/Baldwin Park HS) to national letters of intent.
Apsay, a standout football and basketball player at Canyon High School, can play both guard spots but primarily played the point at CHS. He earned league and
The Signal All–Santa Clarita Valley player of the year honors while leading the Cowboys to their first Foothill League title since 2006 this past season. He also was a two–time All–CIF Southern Section 2AA and
L.A. Daily News All–Area pick.
He averaged 18.1 points and 3.0 assists per game while shooting 42.5 percent beyond the arc and 83.3 percent from the stripe.
In the classroom, the National Honor Society member has been equally impressive, where the senior carries a 3.8 grade point average, earned academic honors in a variety of advanced placement classes. He is also heavily involved in several community service endevors and is the assistant program director for the Bridges to Abilty Foundation.
Morelos, meanwhile, is expected to provide immediate support to the Otter frontline. He was a two–time All–South Coast Conference selection for the Huskies. In addition to his all–conference honors, he was the SCC Freshman of the Year in 2011 and ELAC Team MVP in 2012.
Morelos averaged 13.7 points and 6.9 rebounds per game while leading ELAC in blocked shots this past season. He was also strong on the boards as a prep player, leading Baldwin Park on the glass at 8.2 rpg as a senior in 2008.
COACH BISHOP ON COLEY APSAY
“I'm excited to have Coley Apsay join our program. Coley is an outstanding young man on and off the court. He exemplifies the type of athlete we're looking for at CSUMB. Coley's will and drive to win will help us improve immediately. He comes from a very good basketball program having played for Coach Chad Philipps at Canyon. Otter fans are really going to enjoy watching Coley over the next four seasons.”
COACH BISHOP ON RAFAEL MORELOS
“Rafael is a very welcome addition to our basketball family. He can score and defend in the post and also has the skill set to step away from the basket and score in a variety of ways. His addition gives us depth and toughness we will need to be successful this upcoming season. I look forward to Rafael being an immediate contributor to our program.”
