SEASIDE, Calif. – Cal State Monterey Bay Director of Athletics #Vince Otoupal# introduced #Walt White# as the new head coach of the Otters baseball team today.
“Coach White is a proven leader, coach and mentor to student-athletes. His record on the field as an Associate Head Coach is noteworthy and his reputation as a recruiter and teacher is impressive,” Otoupal said. “Coach White is the right fit for CSUMB and I am confident he and his team will perform at the highest level - in the classroom and on the field - that we strive for every day with athletics at CSUMB. Coach White knows what it takes to be a champion every day.
For the past 15 seasons, White has served as an assistant at fellow California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) member Sonoma State. He was instrumental in leading the 2008 squad to a third place finish in the NCAA Division II World Series after winning the CCAA and NCAA West Regional Championships.
“The search committee felt that Coach White's experience in the CCAA and in recruiting in California will continue to contribute to the mission of CSUMB,” Otoupal said. “Coach White was recommended for the job by people around CCAA Baseball and the entire state of California. The student-athletes from the baseball team who were a part of the interview process gave Coach White a good grade.”
A 1990 graduate of Saugus High, White began his playing career at College of the Canyons where he played from 1991-92. White transferred Sonoma State and was the starting shortstop in 1993 and 1994 for current Seawolf coach John Goelz.
After his stellar playing career at Sonoma State, White was drafted in the 32nd round of the 1994 draft by the Florida Marlins. He went on to spend five seasons in the Marlins system, where he was named to the Midwest League All-Star team in 1996. After a productive season in Portland (AA) in 1998, the Marlins dealt White to the Diamondbacks. He went on to spend three seasons in the Diamondbacks' organization at Tucson (AAA).
After his professional career, White returned to Sonoma State in 2002 to earn his bachelor's degree in kinesiology. In 2005, he received his master's degree in education from University of Phoenix.
"I would like to thank President Harrison, Vince Otoupal, and everyone associated with CSUMB athletics for this opportunity,” White said. “I am honored to be the Head Baseball Coach at CSUMB and I look forward to building our program to a championship level. "
“I believe that under Coach White CSUMB Baseball student-athletes will be victorious on the field, in the classroom, and in the community,” said Otoupal.
