Ryan Lengerich Named Volleyball Assistant Coach

June 30, 2010

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Cal State Monterey Bay women's head volleyball coach #Jody Garry# has announced the hiring of #Ryan Lengerich# as her new assistant volleyball coach.

"I am excited for Ryan to join the CSUMB coaching staff,” Garry said. “He has an extensive background as a player and has had high level club coach experiences and brings a unique outlook to the team. He shares my passion for defense, the importance of being 'smarter' than stronger, and comes highly recommended from other volleyball coaches. I admire his dedication to fitness (marathon runner) and believe his personality and coaching style are a great fit for me and the program."

A native of Cincinnati, Ohio, Lengerich will assist in all aspects of the program including recruiting, practice planning, travel, strength and conditioning.

Lengerich comes to CSUMB after spending last season coaching his Under-15 Fort Myers Fusion team to a 40-8 “open” division record that included a third place finish at the Big South National Qualifier in Atlanta. He was named Florida Region 2010 Coach of the Year in the U-16 and U-15 divisions.

Prior to coaching the Fusion, Lengerich coached at Fort Myers Volleyball Academy and Fort Wayne (Indiana) Volleyball Club.

Lengerich was a four-year starter as an outside hitter for the Indiana University club volleyball team. During his senior year, Lengerich led the Hoosiers to a No. 1 national ranking by the National Intramural- Recreational Sports Association, the governing body for collegiate club volleyball.

In 2003, Lengerich earned a Bachelors of Arts degree in journalism with a minor in political science from Indiana University. He has spent the last seven years as a newspaper editor and reporter at newspapers in New Mexico, Indiana and Florida, primarily writing about government issues. In June as a reporter with The Fort Myers News-Press, Lengerich won first place in the large newspaper division of the Society of Professional Journalists' Sunshine State Awards in the government/political reporting category for a series of stories about government spending.

Lengerich recently married Marisa Scheetz and lives in Pacific Grove, Calif.
