SEASIDE, Calif. – With two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, freshmen
Ronnie Fhurong laced a two-strike fastball down the right field line, scoring senior Justin Aguilera and freshmen #Tommy George# putting the Blue team up 4-2 and securing game three of the 2009 Blue/Gold World Series.
Fhurong's hit was only the fifth of the day for the Blue but proved to be the difference. In a pitcher's duel throughout the day, runs were hard to come by. Blue starter #Jeff Owen# and Gold starter #Thadd McAlpin# kept hitters off balance.
The Gold team struck first with a run in the top of the fifth. Team Blue followed with a run of its own in the bottom half of the frame. The Gold team scored a run in the top of the seventh, when freshmen #Alex Mangubat# led off with a triple to right field. He would later score on a sacrifice fly by sophomore #Niko Kanakaris#. Team Blue answered with a run of its own on a two-out single by senior #Joey Friedman#.
After Fhurong's hit in the bottom of the eighth, team Gold would not back down. Freshmen
Nolan Murray hit a one-out single off of Blue closer
Adam Lanthier. Murray stole second and advance to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, freshmen
Tyler Young singled to right, scoring Murray and pulled the Gold within one. Lanthier then struck out the next hitter, clinching the World Series for the Blue team.
The series marks the end of the fall season for the Otters. The Otters return to the field to face the CSUMB Alumni January 30th at the CSUMB Baseball Field.
