Gold Wins Opening Game of 2009 Blue/Gold World Series

November 13, 2009

SEASIDE, Calif.
– Solid pitching and timely hitting helped the Gold team take game one of the 2009 Blue/Gold World Series 2-0 on Friday at the Otter Baseball Field.

Starter #Patrick McClain# got the win for the Gold after going four shutout innings striking out four while only giving up one hit.  Blue starter #Justin Aguilera# took the loss, giving up one run on two hits.

The Gold team got on the board in the fourth inning with a two out solo home run by shortstop #Alex Mangubat#.  The Gold team scored again in the sixth with a two-out infield single by Sean Barber, scoring Mangubat from third base.

The Blue team had opportunities to score in the seventh and ninth innings.  In the seventh, Team Blue had runners on second and third with one out, but Gold pitcher #Andrew Suarez-Lopez# struck out Blue hitter Tommy George and then induced a ground out by #Brent Sargenti#.  In the ninth inning, Sargenti lined a double off the centerfield wall to start the inning.  Freshmen Jeff Owens' fly ball to center moved him over to 3rd base, but Gold pitcher Billy Miller struck out Aguilera followed by a ground out by Blue first basemen #Ryan Chagonjian# to end the game.

Game two of the World Series is tomorrow with the Gold team starting junior Scott Tully and the Blue team starting #Austin Thiel#.  First pitch is at noon at the CSUMB Baseball Field.
